Leaving the beach behind is HARD. We are mountain people; through and through. But, sometimes laziness can get the best of you. These beaches are the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, the water so clear, the sand so white, the beaches so empty. But sometimes, you just have to muscle up and leave comfort behind in search of a new challenge.

Kampot is a(nother) sleepy town in Southeast Asia, and one that visitors usually either like or don’t. There’s not much in between opinion. We chose to stay way out of town to enjoy the more local, quiet, slow life of Kampot istead of its busier, touristic center. We reaped the benefits.

Family-style home made dinners were delightful.

We get by with a little help from our friends!

We spent one whole day in our bungalow and basically never leaving it. Between reading, swimming from our deck, a little riverside yoga, and napping, what do you really need to leave for?!

The next day, we rallied. Motorbike + 45 minute ride to Kep = a nice little day of exploring. Kep is a little town that is famous for its crab market, and old french architecture. Sleepier still, this town’s National Park had almost no one wandering it, and was truly full of wonders. We strolled slowly, watching the landscape unfold before us. It wasn’t hard to realize that we are still constantly in awe of how different the wilderness is here than at home in Colorado.

As if we weren’t already mistified, out of nowhere flew the park’s last Jurassic-looking Great Hornbill bird, right over our heads, and away into the jungle’s deep curtains of green.

Feeling pretty fortunate, we ventured back to town for a seafood lunch at the crab market.

That’s a jumbo amount of shrimp.

What goes best with local crab? Kampot pepper which grows in abundance here. YES, its delicious. This woman knew she had the good stuff.

The dudes.

A little history and relaxation is the perscription after you’ve filled your belly to the brim with seafood. We obliged, and headed out to see the French Colonial ruins which are untouched in the middle of town, then relax in the hammock colonies (yes thats a thing!) along the water.

“Can you take the trash out?” “Sure, BRB.”

The journey back to Kampot was pretty “traffic” free…

…until the traffic jam of cuteness.

You know its been a good day when you’re tired, full, happy, and you get to fall asleep in the most cozy bungalow there ever was.
